Here is a look at some players around MLB that are possible trade targets and the teams that are interested in them.
Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays- Interested teams: Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels. Everyone in a playoff race should be interested in Halladay. He still has one year left on his contract so the Jays will demand a king’s ransom for him. Part of that ransom might be taking on the contract of Vernon Wells also. The Angels might think about it with Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter likely to miss at least a month each.
Update 7/23- The Jays have had a scout checking out Kyle Drabek (son of Doug Drabek and Phillies Minor Leaguer), a player of high interest to the Jays and would most likely have to be included in any trade proposal for Halladay. The Dodgers also have a ton of prospects that they might be willing to give up to get Halladay and Ned Colletti is willing to talk.
Update 7/29- It looks as though that halladay will probably stay in Toronto now that the Indians have traded Cliff Lee to the Phillies. Remember, the jays don’t have to trade Halladay. He is signed through next season and the Jays can afford him so the only way anyone is going to get Halladay is to absolutely blow J.P. Ricciardi away. The Red Sox are balking at what the Jays want, as are the Yankees. The Angels may be a bit of a sleeper here if Ricciardi gets an itchy trigger finger. The Halos have Brandon Wood and a few other prospects along with struggling Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana. It would probably take Wood, Erick Aybar and either Saunders or Santana to get a deal done and that just may be too much for the Angels to give up.
Scott Kazmir, Tampa Bay Rays- Interested teams: Los Angeles Angels. The Rays have been taking a long look at the Angels farm system possibly because the Angels might be interested in Kazmir. The Angels are looking for starting pitching and even though Kazmir is having a bad year, he is still young, 25 years old. Now that it is out there that the Rays might be trading Kazmir, expect a few more teams to come knocking.
Update 7/29- There have been whispers that the Mariners might be trying to get Kazmir via trade. There’s nothing substantial out there as of yet but with Erik Bedard’s immediate future unknown, the M’s could be looking for a SP.
Victor Martinez, Cleveland Indians- Interested teams: Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox turned down a trade that could have netted them V-Mart but they decided that Clay Buccholz is not worth giving up.
Update 7/23- The Rays are now said to be interested in acquiring V-Mart but those talks are in preliminary stages (A.K.A. the Rays are kicking the tires).
Update 7/29- The Red Sox have showed continued interest in V-Mart even after trading for Adam LaRoche. It would be interesting to see how they would split up the playing time between Jason Varitek, LaRoche, V-Mart and David Ortiz. Someone will trade for Martinez because there is no point in the Indians keeping him now that they have traded Cliff Lee. They are in a rebuilding mode now and surely will move Martinez within the next two days.
Justin Duchscherer, Oakland Athletics- Interested teams: Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees. The Duke is ready to start throwing again and both the Brew Crew and the Yanks are going to take a good hard look at him. The A’s on the other hand, might want to return him to the bullpen where he originally started with the A’s and made an All-Star game as a reliever. He has value as both a reliever and starter coupled with health issues.
Cliff Lee, Cleveland Indians- Interested teams: Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankes, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels. Lee can be had if a team steps up and overwhelms the Indians with an offer. The problem is, most teams would rather overwhelm the Jays to get Halladay. So, expect all of the losers in the race to get Halladay to be in the running to pick up the next best option on the trade block.
Update 7/29- Lee was traded along with Ben Francisco to the Phillies for four prospects (Triple A right-hander Carlos Carrasco, Single A right-hander Jason Knapp, catcher Lou Marson, and SS Jason Donald). The Phillies made out like bandits in this deal. Donald and Marson are very good prospects and Carrasco and Knapp project to have bright futures in the pros but, the Phillies didn’t have to give up J.A. Happ, outfielders Dominic Brown and Michael Taylor or pitcher Kyle Drabek, three of which would have had to have been included in a trade for Roy Halladay. This doesn’t bode well for the Blue Jays in terms of what they can get for Halladay now. Looks like Halladay may be staying put. Meanwhile, the Phillies get a Cy Young winner (2008) in Lee to solidify their rotation. Nice job Philly!
Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants- Interested teams: Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies. Sanchez just threw the first no-hitter by a Giants pitcher since 1976. He was rumored to be on the trade block before and this should just bump up his value even more. He is a talented young pitcher that seems to need to find himself out on the mound. This should show everyone that he does have the stuff to be great, but can he do it consistently?
Update 7/23- It looks more and more like the Giants won’t trade Sanchez after all with the health of Randy Johnson in question. Look for Sanchez to remain in the rotation until they can at least figure out when Johnson will be back at full speed.
Scott Rolen, Toronto Blue Jays- Interested teams: Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners. Rolen will make $10 million next year and that added to his injury history will scare teams away. But if you need a third baseman badly enough, it might not take much to pry him away from the Jays.
Update 7/29- The Reds may still be looking at trying to acquire Rolen from the Jays. The word on the street is that a deal could include Aaron Harang. That would lessen the blow of a possible Roy Halladay trade.
Garrett Atkins, Colorado Rockies- Interested teams: Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds. The Red Sox want insurance for Mike Lowell’s hip. Seattle needs a third baseman to replace Adrian Beltre (out for the season) this year and for the future and could offer Miguel Bautista who makes roughly the same amount as Atkins. The Reds for some reason don’t trust Edwin Encarnacion.
Freddy Sanchez, Pittsburgh Pirates- Interested teams: Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies. The Pirates want Eric Young Jr. from the Rockies but the Rockies seem to be more interested in piching. The Giants have offered Jonathan Sanchez. The Mariners just completed a trade of Yuniesky Betancourt for two minor leaguers. Could this mean that they might hop on the Freddy Sanchez wagon?
Update 7/29- Sanchez was traded to the Giants for pitching prospect Tim Alderson. Alderson is a future stud but, Sanchez has been an All-Star 3 out of the last 4 years. I like this deal for the Giants for two reasons. 1) There is no guarantee that Alderson will pan out. 2) Second base was a problem for the Giants and Sanchez is a very good player that will stay in the NL where he is comfortable and proven. The switch to the pitcher friendly park shouldn’t have much of an effect on Sanchez’ numbers. The Pirates did a nice job of plucking Alderson away from the Giants but it’s not like there isn’t any risk here. The Giants are strong in pitching and could afford to take the risk and the Pirates are terrible and constantly rebuilding so at least they are consistent.
