Wieters the Waiver Wonder?

baltimoreoriolesvfloridamarlinsi_izxrbian6lI was browsing the message board in one of my leagues the other day and came across a post titled “Wieters For Sale”. I was intrigued so I decided to read the post and this is what it said, “Let me know if you want him, as he is officially on the block. I’m looking for some speed and a legit SP. J”. He is referring to Super Prospect Matt Wieters of course. Now keep in mind that this is a keeper league so it makes sense for J to use his #1 waiver on a prospect as heralded as Wieters. But speed and a legit SP might be asking too much. I desperately need a catcher but I don’t think that Wieters is the answer this year.

What is Wieters worth exactly? Well to be honest, I wouldn’t use a #1 waiver on him unless it was for a keeper league. The guy has done nothing yet to prove that he is worth rostering except for having major potential. I know, you’re probably thinking isn’t that what your bench spots are for? Well, yes and no. I would rather have a productive player on my roster (except in keeper leagues) instead of someone who will just take up a spot and do nothing for me.

J has the right idea though. Wieters is so hyped up right now by the fantasy baseball world that his value might never be as high as it currently is. Who knows? He may be the next Joe Mauer or he could be the next Jarrod Saltalamacchia (who still might turn out to be a stud). Nobody knows for sure what kind of player he will be until we have a chance to see what he can do at the MLB level. I will be making an offer for him in this league but it won’t be the entire house I’m offering.
