Fantasy Relevance ’09 is a breakdown of each M.L.B. team that shows the players with fantasy value from each respective team. There are four categories the players will be broken down into and they are as follows: Studs, Role Players, Keepers and Sleepers. Hopefully this will help you in your quest for Fantasy Baseball dominance.
Studs:
Roy Halladay- He is as good as it gets but be careful with him this year. He threw a whopping 246 innings last year and that usually leads to an injury the following year or at least a tired arm. Halladay is one of the best pitchers in the game though and will be hard to let slip into the later rounds of the draft. He is the kind of pitcher that helps in all categories from ERA, WHIP, KS to Wins. I can’t say enough about him. He won 20 games last year on a terrible team and barring injury, will have a great shot at doing it again. After Halladay, the Jays really don’t another fantasy stud.
Role Players:
Alex Rios- What happened to Rios last year? Everyone expected him to be a fantasy stud and build on the previous season and it just didn’t happen. The only useful category he built on was SB where he added 15 from the previous season’s total to finish with 32. Every other important category felt a drop off. Hopefully, this year will be a turn around year for him.
Vernon Wells- Batting .300 with 20 HR, 78 RBI and 63 Runs in only 108 games has to be encouraging for Wells owners except for the whole games missed due to injury aspect. Wells showed that he was able to regroup and play at high level again after a terrible ’07 season. If he can stay healthy this year he definitely has a chance to make it back into the realm of fantasy stud. But, for now he stays at role player.
B.J. Ryan- Here is Closer that when healthy is capable of getting 40+ saves (even on a bad team) but can he stay healthy? He is no longer considered a top tier Closer but he is worth having on your roster.
Keepers:
Travis Snider- In 24 games last year with the Jays, Snider hit .301 with 2 HR and 13 RBI. The Jays are very high on this guy and he looks like he can handle big league pitching. i know that it is a small sample size but he does have potential. In 14 games at home last year he batted .370 which means that he likes hitting at home and since the Jays play half of their games at home, this should bode well for Snider.
Sleepers:
Scott Rolen- Last year was a huge disappointment for Rolen and his owners. He did however finish the season on a high note batting .307 with 3 HR and 11 RBI over the final 25 games. This was due to a change in his batting stance that took pressure off of his injured shoulder. Rolen could be a decent option at 3rd if he can manage to stay healthy but I wouldn’t count on it.
