Wide receiver Plaxico Burress was expected to miss the team’s week 13 game against Washington with an injured right hamstring. Now, reports out of New York are saying that Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday night while attending a night club.
The New York Giants team officials are not commenting on the incident as of yet. “I don’t have anything for you at this stage,” Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon told The Associated Press from Giants Stadium. The gunshot wound is not believed to be life threatening. This is just another blemish for Burress who was fined by the Giants earlier this year for not attending a team meeting without giving a reason. He was also fined by the NFL for conduct on the field earlier this year during a game against the 49ers.
Burress’ injury to his hamstring would have kept him out of week 13 anyway. He hurt the hamstring on November 16, in the Giants’ win over the Ravens. He then re-aggravated the injured hamstring in the first series of the team’s week 12 game against the Cardinals. He came out of that game and did not return. Coach Tom Coughlin said Burress “is progressing, no doubt. He is getting better.” Domenik Hixon will start in Burress’ place. Burress hasn’t missed a game since Nov. 5, 2006, sitting out with a back injury. He played through a season long ankle injury in every game for the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants last season. Who knows how long the new injury will keep him out?
